India orders one-year extension of export ban on some pulses

India's federal government Friday issued a notification extending the ban on exports of pulses except kabuli chana (chickpeas) until March 31, 2010.

Last year, the government had extended the ban to March 31 this year due to a production shortfall and to curb rising inflation.

According to latest government estimates, total pulses production in 2008-09 is likely to fall to 14.25 million tonnes from 14.76 million tonnes last year.

India is the world's largest importer of pulses.
