Switzerland's meat consumption up 3 percent in 2008
Overall meat consumption in Switzerland during 2008 reached 417,330 tonnes, up 3 percent on-year and is the fourth consecutive increase, according to Swiss meat association Proviande.
Meat consumption per capita is estimated at 53 kg.
Pork was the most popular meat, selling 196,000 tonnes, followed by beef at 88,000 tonnes and poultry at 85,000 tonnes.
In the previous year, consumption was highest in chickens and cows, which increased by 7.3 percent and 5.8 percent, respectively. Demand was slightly lower for veal, lamb and pork.
About 90 percent of the pork, 80 percent of beef and 50 percent of poultry were produced domestically, said Proviande.
