Malaysian fishmeal production expected to be low

Malaysia's fishmeal production is expected to decline continually due to depleted fish stocks.

Imports are about 20,000 tonnes annually, according to the latest USDA Malaysia Oilseeds and Products report.

Imports from traditional sources such as Peru and Chile have altogether disappeared as they are also experiencing over-fishing.

Malaysia is trying to source from other non-traditional suppliers such as India and Italy. Exports amounted to 18,000 tonnes in 2011, mainly to China, Taiwan and Bangladesh.
