US state sees increase in number of hogs

 

 

Farms in Kansas see a 1% increase in hogs from December 1 last year, up to 1.82 million hogs as of March 1.

 

Market hogs accounted for the remaining 91% of the total inventory, at 1.65 million heads.

 

Hogs and pigs kept for breeding purposes totalled 170,000 heads, down 6% from 2010, but unchanged from December 1 last year. Breeding stock accounted for 9% of all hogs and pigs.

 

Market hogs weighing less than 50 pounds totalled 490,000 heads, up 2% from last year. The 50-119 pound weight group, at 365,000 heads, was up 12% from a year ago. The 120-179 pound weight group totalled 280,000 heads, up 4% from a year ago. The 180 pound and overweight group was at 515,000 heads.
