Australian pig farmers push for import restrictions

According to reports, New South Wales (NSW) Farmers' Association is putting pressure on the government to limit pork imports coming into Australia.

Competing with pork being imported are concerning pork producers. The Australian Pork Limited has created a 'Pork Mark' that state to consumers what is 100% Australian pork.

However, chairman of the NSW Farmers' Association's pork committee, Malcolm Gett, has stated that better marketing is not enough. "There are still record volumes of imports coming in. It would be nice to be able to slow that down somehow or other," he adds.

It is reported that 2.6 million pork is imported weekly into Australia.
