Profits draw farmers to Vietnam's Mekong Delta for catfish production
Excited by the prospect of high profits, Vietnamese farmers have flocked to An Giang province in the Mekong Delta to raise and process breeder catfish.
In a statement to local newspaper Thanh Nien, expert breeder Nguyen Van Vong from Tien Giang province said farmers could reap profits of about VND1.8 billion (about US$112,500) per hectare after raising the fish for five months.
With the deluge of people pouring into the region to buy land with fish ponds, local land prices have shot up.
Another farmer from Can Tho City said he had bought land for breeder catfish production there, expecting profits to quadruple from the invested capital.
