Chile to resume US beef imports

Chile has agreed to resume imports of US beef after the two countries clarified the certification of beef grade labelling, according to the US Trade Representative's office on Friday (Mar 27).

Chile suspended US beef imports in September over a dispute on how the beef would be certified under the provisions of a bilateral free trade pact.

Chile imported US$1 million worth of US beef in 2008 before the trade stopped, or twice the amount purchased in 2007, USTR said.

US Trade Representative Ron Kirk said it is important for the US to unlock every opportunity for robust trade during these difficult economic times.
