Switzerland's 2012 chicken population up 5%
In 2012, the number of chickens in Switzerland was increased by 5% compared to 2011, rising to close to 10 million.
This was stated by the federal statistics office, the Local.
According to the latest census of Swiss farm animals, the country continues to have more chickens than people. By comparison, Switzerland's population is around eight million.
One-fourth of the 9.88 million chickens were used for egg-laying and breeding, according to the statistics report.
However, the country's chickens constitute only about 50% of the domestic market for eggs and poultry, while the remaining 50% come in from imports.
