Brazil's corn output may be lower than expected

Corn output in Brazil may decline more than previously forecast due to the persistent drought, according to satellite-image provider Lanworth Inc.

Brazil's first crop of the season, planted from September to November and now being harvested, may fall 15 percent on-year and down 1.3 percent from Lanworth's March 6 forecast to 33.99 million tonnes, said Lanworth vice president Nick Kouchoukos.

Much of the corn plantings in Brazil's southern part have been significantly affected by drought, Kouchoukos said Wednesday (Mar 25).

He said dry conditions affected all major producing regions, with the most damage done to crops in the states of Parana, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.
