Pork consumption in Venezuela rises to 25 percent

Pork consumption has leaped to 25 percent since the onset of 2007 due to irregular supply of beef and chicken meat in the past few months, according to the Federation of Venezuelan Pork Producers (Feporcina).

The boost was also pointed to the growing purchasing power of the impoverished Venezuelans, according to Feporcina president Alberto Cudemus.

Cudemus guaranteed that pork supply in the country would be regular at the end of the current year.

On the other hand, the Government of Venezuela announced the elimination of the value added tax (VAT) on some foods and on the road transportation services related to those foods.

The food with cancelled VAT includes beef, pork and turkey meat, as well as mayonnaise and cheese.
