Brazil's gross value of poultry production down 7.4 percent for 2006

The gross value of production (GVP) of Brazil's poultry farming sector totalled 19.8 billion Brazilian reais (US $9.6 billion) in 2006, down 7.4 percent on-year, according to Brazil's national agricultural association CAN.

Brazil's chicken sector registered GVP of 16.32 billion reais (US$7.9 billion), down 8.65 percent.

Egg producers' GVP accounted for the remaining 3.468 billion reais (US$1.7 billion) down 0.9 percent.

The falls are due to the prices decline of both chicken meat and eggs amid increased output and decreased international demand due to bird flu.

Chicken prices fell by 8.85 percent while egg prices fell 9.41 percent.

Brazil's 2006 chicken output was estimated at 9.3 million tonnes, up 0.41 percent while chicken production was up 9.43 percent.
