EU consumers want products from farms with animal-friendly policies

EU consumers are willing to make an extra effort to buy animal welfare friendly products, according to a Eurobarometer survey.

The survey showed that animal welfare is ranked highly among EU citizens, giving it an average of 8 out of 10 on average in terms of importance.

Those surveyed also said they were willing to change where they shop or even pay more for goods that promoted animal welfare.

Markos Kyprianou, Commissioner for Health, said the survey showed that EU citizens view animal welfare as a priority and are willing to contribute to its promotion.

The results of this survey gave positive backing to what the Commission has been working towards. Kyprianou said the Commission had devoted much time and resources to improve animal welfare both within and beyond the EU, and he is heartened to see that these efforts are supported by EU citizens.

Most respondents backed labelling or logos that indicate the animal welfare standards met in producing the foods they buy. There was also general support for financially rewarding EU farmers who use better animal welfare practices.
