Peru's 2013 shrimp exports up 38.1%
In 2013, Peru exported shrimp for US$129 million, an increase of 38.1% over 2012, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).
Last year, the price of shrimp in the international market recorded its highest rate in the past 11 years at 24.4% more than in 2012.
According to the statistics released by the agency, between 2002 and 2013, the earnings from the sale of shrimp showed an increasing trend with an average annual variation of 21.5%.
During this period, the volume of exported shrimp recorded a cumulative percentage variation of 409.7%, maintaining an average annual growth rate of 16%.
Exports in 2013 were mainly destined to Spain and the US, which accounted for 72% of total exports.
The INEI also reported that in January 2014, the export value of shrimp products grew by 160.2%, associated with the increase in volume of 71.8% and price at 51.4% compared with the same month of 2013.
US continued as the main destination of exports of shrimp, with income representing 74.8% of total export value, which amounted to US$17.1 million.
