Fiji's seafood demand grows

A higher demand for seafood, leading to more market opportunities for local people is expected by Fiji's Department of Fisheries in the Northern Division as the government is currently looking into the expansion of deep sea snapper.

The opening of the 24 hour Rabi ice plant has provided storage for the increasing number of fish being harvested in Rabi, Yanuca, Kioa and the Tunuloa and Natewa areas of Cakaudrove.

The department has also expanded its prawn farming thrust in Vanua Levu, states the newspaper.

Last January the department harvested prawns from a new pond outside Labasa which also farmed tilapia.

Because of developments and infrastructures setting up taking place in the Northern Division, investors are coming in and markets are opening up for fish farmers.
