Mexico 2007 corn production seen to increase by 10 percent
Mexican corn production probably will rise at least 10 percent this year or 2 million tonnes more, Mexico's Agriculture Minister Alberto Cardenas said on Friday (March 23).
Tight supplies of corn, a staple food product in Mexico, have led to an inflation spike in the country in recent months.
Cardenas said Mexico will increase the amount of land it uses to grow corn by at least 500,000 hectares (1.2 million acres).
Mexican President Vicente Fox has stated the country would control domestic corn prices further to make sure rising global costs do not push inflation up and hurt consumers.
