Marcabarna spends on new facilities

A new premise built by Mercabarna on the campus of the Zona Franca de Barcelona will produce 250 jobs and attract added value businesses to the city.

A total of EUR4.6 million (US$6.48 million) was invested in the new area which was opened on Tuesday (Mar 22) by the president of Mercabarna and First Deputy Mayor of Barcelona, Jordi William Carnes, and the director of the company, Montserrat Gil.

"Barcelona is committed to its traditional industry so not all should be clean and new businesses," said the owner of Mercabarna. He also stressed the hard work of businesses in the central market.

The facilities were built in the area formerly occupied by the Mercado de la Flor with an area of 35,000 square metres.

Some 12 companies will be located in the new building, according to the media.

One of the first companies to install itself is the Mercat Central del Peix (Central Fish Market), where fish will be processed for export.

In addition, a company from the fresh and frozen fish sector has already booked a warehouse measuring 715 square metres.

"Remember that in a couple of years this area of the city shall have a Metro of just over 50 metres. The city is committed to its older industrial area," said Carnes.
