Danish Crown closes pork facility on fears of swine fever

A slaughterhouse of Danish Crown in Horsens, Denmark has been closed temporarily following fears that a pig sent to slaughter may have been suffering from swine fever.

The pig originated from a farm near Aarhus. Tests are being carried out to determine whether the slaughterhouse can reopen, or whether the swine fever diagnosis is confirmed.

Swine fever is not dangerous to humans, but confirmation of the disease could seriously affect Denmark's multi-billion pork exports.

Although swine fever fears in Denmark are relatively frequent the country has not seen an outbreak of the disease since 1933.
