The head of Saudi Arabia's sole wheat importer thinks Australia would be one of the top potential places to buy agricultural assets as the world's largest oil producer moves to secure food supplies.
The Grain Silos and Flour Mills Organisation director-general Waleed Elkhereiji is investigating importing Western Australian wheat and will tour the facilities of CBH, the country's biggest grains handler, according to reports.
Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest importer of barley, is on a worldwide search for wheat. Until two years ago, the kingdom produced enough wheat for its own consumption but production drained its dwindling water supply.
It must secure about 2.5 million tonnes a year, worth about US$625 million, and Australia is looking to get a slice of the action.
If Saudi Arabia sourced half its wheat from WA, it would be one of the state's biggest export destinations after Indonesia, Japan and Korea.
