USDA sets requirements for ID devices

USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has announced the livestock identification number as the next phase of the voluntary National Animal Identification System (NAIS).

Individual cattle and swine typically use identification ear tags (known as AIN tags) when official identification is necessary.

APHIS also has an option with NAIS that allows livestock producers to use identification methods with the AIN tag such as radio frequency identification and biometrics.

To improve compatibility and uniformity with NAIS, APHIS will establish technology standards along with performance requirements. The AIN tags issued will have several features in their performance standards.

Firstly, the tag is designed for one-time use only and shall be tamper-free. The printing on the tag should not be easily altered and should include the 15-digit AIN and USDA shield. The AIN number must be readable from a distance of 30 inches. Additionally, the tag must remain affixed to the animal for the lifetime of the animal.
