Japan's membership in free trade pact to benefit Australian beef producers

Australian farmers can look to greater access to their second-largest trading market, Japan, after its confirmation of joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a pact supporting free trade in the Asia-Pacific region.

Meat and Livestock Australia's regional manager in Japan, Melanie Brock, says beef producers should benefit from the deal, which could eliminate some tariffs.

"The gain that we can get is greater access," she said.

"Also, as the importers and suppliers, who've been supporting our product for such a long time, are afforded a reduction in those barriers, then it might mean there's greater growth, greater capacity for them to on-sell our product."
