Forecast for EU grain production takes a downturn
EU grain production was revised lower to 291.2 million tonnes, due mainly to the fall in expected wheat production.
The EU 2010-11 soft wheat production is revised down slightly on the month to 134.1 million tonnes, Strategy Grains data showed Thursday Mar 18). This is 600,000 tonnes lower than the firm's February forecast, although it remains 3% higher than the previous year's output.
The firm lowered its soft wheat production estimates for countries including Ireland, the UK, Denmark and Romania.
This is down slightly from 2009-10 grain production of 292.5 million tonnes, although it remains a bumper crop by historical averages.
