Livestock owners in central Queensland are urged to have contingency plans in place for this weekend when Cyclone Ului is expected to cross the coast.

Minister for Primary Industries, Fisheries and Rural and Regional Queensland, Tim Mulherin said regardless of the strength of Cyclone Ului, it would almost certainly bring heavy rain and strong winds.

"Some forecasts show the cyclone moving a considerable distance inland," the minister said. "People living on central and north Queensland properties should be prepared for possible loss of power and perhaps being isolated by floodwaters."

"Livestock owners should move their stock to higher ground in anticipation of flooding. It's also a good idea to have emergency fodder supplies on hand in case stock become stranded by floodwaters next week," he said. "Owners should be extra careful when handling their animals at this time. Animals get jittery before a storm and are more easily upset and spooked."

"Ensure your livestock and pets have some form of identification, such as a name tag or brand, to help facilitate their return, should they become frightened and get loose. Ensure that stock registers are up-to-date and kept in a safe place," he added.
