Brazilian bovine genetics market ramps up

Brazilian bovine genetics sales increased 12% on-year in 2009 to 9.2 million doses, with beef cattle genetics accounting for 57%.

Out of the total, 42% was imported, while only 21% of total beef cattle doses sold were imported.

The local industry has gradually increased artificial insemination practices in recent years, crossing Zebu with European cattle to achieve higher productivity and quality characteristics.

According to the Brazilian Association of Artificial Insemination, Brazil currently has a limited number of certified European genetics production centres, making it easier to import genetics rather than start expensive and time-consuming selection processes.

Nelore, a Zebu breed, is the main beef cattle genetic sold in Brazil, mainly due to its most appropriate rusticity and resistance to Brazil's tropical raising conditions.
