Mexico skips corn, wheat for hiked tariffs

Mexico will not include corn, wheat and beans among imports from the US facing increased tariffs, according to a spokesman for the Mexican economy ministry.

The increased tariffs is speculated to be Mexico's retaliation against the US for the cancelation of a 2007 US pilot programme that allowed Mexican trucks full access to US highways.

The spokesman said those products will be skipped over for the new tariffs because Mexicans are sensitive to them.

Corn and sorghum are grain commodities used by Mexico's livestock, poultry and food sectors, therefore tariffs on those products will increase the prices of domestic meat, milk and eggs.

Mexico is expected to release the list of 90 agricultural and industrial products that will face higher tariffs on March 18, 2009.
