Russia may review restriction on Welsh lamb, beef
Russia may lift restriction on Welsh lamb and beef following inspection, opening up the Russian beef market valued up to US$181 million annually for the UK.
A team of Russian inspectors has visited Wales in the first stage of a possible export deal for Welsh lamb.
Exports of UK lamb and beef to Russia are currently restricted but Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC)--the Welsh red meat body--is confident these will be lifted once the inspection process is completed.
The HCC said the Russian beef market alone could be worth up to GBP115 million (US$181 million) a year for British producers.
"I am optimistic of a positive outcome," said HCC's Laura Dodds.
Eight Russian vets visited farms and abattoirs to assess facilities. It follows similar inspections by Chinese and Canadian officials. Canada has already allowed Welsh lamb into the country, while China is still in the inspection process.
