China's export of raw pig products hits close to US $1 billion in 2006
The export value of China's raw pig products, including fresh and frozen pork, processed pork, pig offal and live pigs, reached US$983 million in 2006, up 3.9 percent on-year, according to China's Animal and Husbandry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture.
Fresh and frozen pork accounted for 41 percent, while processed pork accounted for 36 percent while live pigs accounted for 23 percent of the total.
Fresh and frozen pork imports showed a significant increase of 26 percent while export-wise, processed pork exports showed the fastest growth at 14 percent ( excluding offal).
In stark contrast to exports, China imported only US$160 million worth of raw pig products last year. The figure was down 10.5 percent from last year.
Most of China's pig imports were overwhelmingly pig offal, accounting for 84 percent of the total while fresh and frozen pork only accounted for 13.3 percent.
Although pig offal imports was up 16 percent on-year, value was down 7.8 percent on-year to US$134 million. China mainly imports pig offal from France, the USA and Canada.
The fresh and frozen pork import volume reached 23,800 tonnes valued at US$21.3 million, an on-year decrease of 23.20 percent and 26.02 percent, respectively.
Pork imports from Canada and France reached 20,000 tonnes, accounting for 85 percent of the total pork import volume.
Processed pork imports doubled to 674,100 tonnes last year, with import value reaching US$310,900, rising 48 percent year-on-year. China mainly imported processed pork from France and Japan.
The average price of raw pigs in major raw pig production areas, including Hunan, Sichuan, Henan, Shandong and Hebei Provinces, was RMB7.01/kg in 2006.
Raw pig prices fell for five straight months in the first half of the year, from RMB7.39/kg in January to RMB5.64/kg in May, the lowest in two years.
Prices rebounded in June and by December it was RMB9.29/kg in December, up 42.7 percent on-year.
Meanwhile, live pig price was at RMB7.20/kg, down 9 percent on-year. Like raw pig prices, live pig prices also declined continuously in the first five months of 2006 and recorded the lowest figure of RMB5.96/kg in May, down 19.5 percent over the price in January.
The price of live pigs started to increase in June, and reached RMB9.18/kg in December, the highest since October 2004, up 32.1 percent on-year.
The average price of China's pork reached RMB12.11/kg in 2006, an on-year decrease of 7.77 percent.
Pork price fell to a low of RMB10.58/kg in June, down 15 percent over the price in January. The price began rebounding in July, and reached RMB14.40/kg in December, up 20.5 percent year-on-year. The average retail price of pork in the fourth quarter reached RMB13.58/kg, a year-on-year increase of 12.7 percent and a quarter-on-quarter increase of 13.55 percent.
China's live pig exports stood at 1.7 million heads in 2006, valued at US$225M, year-on-year decreases of 2.4 percent and 0.7 percent, respectively. China's live pigs were mainly exported to Hong Kong and Macao, with export value reaching US$208 million and US$17.4 million, respectively.
China's fresh and frozen pork exports increased 7.4 percent on-year to reach 268,900 tonnes. Despite the increased volumes, value fell 1.26 percent to US$401 million.
China's fresh and frozen pork was mainly exported to Hong Kong, North Korea and Vietnam, with the total export volume to these three regions accounting for three-quarters of the total.
Processed pork exports was close to 150,000 tonnes in 2006, with a value of US$356 million, an on-year increase of 10.5 percent and 14.0 percent, respectively.
China's processed pork was mainly exported to Japan, Hong Kong and the Philippines, with export volume reaching 79,100 tonnes, 29,600 tonnes and 12,100 tonnes, respectively. The three countries combined accounts for 80 percent of China's total processed pork exports.
China exported a total of 574 tonnes of pig offal in 2006, up 61 percent on-year, mainly to Thailand.
