Indonesia's 2012 shrimp output to climb 10%
Indonesia's shrimp production is expected to climb 10% to 420,000 tonnes this year, helped by a revamp of a number of ponds in northern coast of Java.
In addition, Dipasena in Lampung, once known as the world's largest single shrimp producer, has also resumed operation after lying idle last year, Shrimp Club Indonesia (SCI) said.
Dipasena shrimp ponds were in trouble last year but this year they are expected to produce up to 40,000 tonnes, SCI chairman Iwan Sutanto said without specifying the trouble.
Last year, the country's shrimp production totalled 381,288 tonnes falling short of the target of 420,000 tonnes.
Indonesia exports most or 90% of its shrimp production mainly to the US, Japan and Europe.
