Brazilian meat output seen to grow 38%

Brazilian meat production is estimated to grow by 38% to 30.5 million tonnes during the next decade to 2020 as a result of increased productivity, according to research performed by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture.

Within meats, chicken is expected to record the fastest production growth at 3.6% per annum, followed by beef at 2.2% and pork at 2%. This is much slower than the 6.8%, 4.2% and 4.6% per annum growth recorded over the past 10 years, respectively.

According to the report, Brazilian domestic beef consumption is expected to grow at 1.9% per annum, leaving beef exports to growth at 3.9% per annum, totalling 3.09 million tonnes cwt in 2019-20 from 2.11 million tonnes cwt in 2009-10.

The report states that Brazilian agriculture is expected to grow 2.7% per annum, while cultivated land area is expected to grow by a lower 0.5% per annum.

The recovery of degraded areas, use of cultivated pastures, better usage of lands in the central region and improved irrigation systems are fuelling Brazil's higher productivity.
