Scottish salmon exports to the US rise US$74.8 million

The Scottish farmed salmon sector saw its sales value to the US rise almost 30%, from US$257.64 million in 2012 to nearly US$332.44 million last year.

Commenting on this strong export performance, Scott Landsburgh, chief executive of Scottish Salmon Producers' Organisation (SSPO) said, "These impressive figures are the result of the fantastic reputation our salmon enjoys in the US. Quality and Scottish provenance are key to the American market."

"Major retail chains and high end restaurants are delighted with the salmon we supply from Scotland. The industry has been supported by Scottish Development International (SDI) to open more market opportunities for Scottish salmon, making the US our largest export market," he added.

These comments were made ahead of the Seafood Expo North America Exhibition, which is to be held from March 16 to March 18 in Boston, US, where the Scottish salmon sector will be meeting buyers from the US's top retail and food service companies.

According to Anne MacColl, chief executive of Scottish Development International, the international arm of Scotland's enterprise agencies, the US market, which demands the highest standards, recognises top quality in fresh food and is an excellent place for their salmon companies to expand their international reach.

James Withers, chief executive officer of Scotland Food and Drink, said, "The reputation of Scottish salmon as the 'best farmed salmon in the world' continues to dominate the world's most lucrative markets. This is a large boost to the overall status of the Scottish food economy."

The exhibition to be held in Boston will be attended by 1000 exhibitors from over 40 countries and it is expected 19,000 visitors and 400 key buyers will be present.
