Climate change affects fish in Myanmar

The widespread of parasites and diseases in water was caused by climatic changes from the cold to hot season which resulted in the rise in temperature.

Win Kyaing of Myanmar Fisheries Federation said that these parasites and bacteria lives in gills, esophagus, the body of fishes and also in the water.

After examining the fish and water in the fish ponds at the laboratory, bacteria and parasites are found. Moreover there are sores over the body of fish. Scales near the tail swollen and sores are also found, he added.

According to the research, parasites that are deadly to fish abundantly grow in the water in the changes of weather. Especially in the changes in weather from rainy season to cold season and cold season to hot season, fish usually die because of reproduction of parasites and shortage of oxygen.

At a time when weather changes occur, for example from cold season to hot season, water in the fish pond face changes in temperature like heat and cold. Day temperature is very high during the day.

At night, temperature is rather low as it is still cold season. Because of these high and low temperature consequences, oxygen depletion occurs in the fish pond. This lack of oxygen leads to abundance of parasites at the bottom of the pond, he continued.

If the fishery entrepreneurs found out this kind of incidence, they should cooperate with the laboratory for systematic investigation. No market sells fish killed by parasites or diseases, vice - chairman of executive committee Han Tun of the federation said.
