Russia's 2008 pork output to increase 6 percent, beef down 3.5 percent
Russia's pork production is forecast to increase 6 percent in 2008 while beef production could decrease 3.5 percent.
The forecast 6 percent growth in Russian pork production is mainly due to increasing investments in pig production and higher reproductive yields, according to an attach¨¦ report.
The projected growth is also attributed to Russia's National Priority Project, which provides state funding for four selected areas including agriculture, and import restrictions.
Beef production is forecast to drop by 3.5 percent due to poor cattle husbandry, and that potential investors would shun the beef sector due to negative profitability that has plagued the sector for 12 years. Cattle herd in 2008 is also forecast to suffer a 3 percent decline due to low production and reproductive efficiency.
Russia is currently in talks with the US over new health protocols for live cattle, live pigs and cow embryos.
