Thailand targets 200,000 tonnes of chicken exports to Japan

Thailand aims to export more than 200,000 tonnes of chicken products to Japan this year, bringing exports close to the level before the bird flu outbreak.

The director general of the department of livestock development, Tritsadi Chaosuancharoen  also proposed that South Korea import Thai chicken which isxpected to be ready for export later this year.

Tritsadi said that Japan has already been importing raw chicken meat from Thailand since December 2013. 200,000 tonnes of chicken meat is expected to be exported, comprising 70,000 tonnes of raw chicken meat and 130,000 tonnes of processed chicken meat.

Before the previous bird flu outbreak, Japan imported more than 200,000 tonnes of raw chicken meat per year from Thailand.

Because of the bird flu outbreak in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region and in the neighbouring countries, the department of livestock development has constantly implemented bird flu surveillance and prevention measures. For example, farmers will spray disinfectant twice a year at every farm and four times a year in vulnerable areas. Public health agencies and border customs checkpoints will monitor the transport of both domestic and international poultry.

Tritsadi also mentioned the eastern region's Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease-free area certification from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), and the region is now being strengthened by new OIE criteria, such as laws on animal transport and the establishment of clear division of areas. These are expected to be presented to the OIE for consideration this year.
