Argentina 2009 soy output likely at 42.5 million tonnes

Argentina's 2009 soy production will likely fall to 42.5 million tonnes from 46.2 million in 2008, Thomas Mielke, editor-in-chief of Hamburg-based Oil World, said Thursday (March 12).

South American soy production this year will likely be 106 million tonnes, down from 115 million tonnes last year and off earlier expectations of 118 million tonnes, Mielke said in a pre-recorded speech broadcast at a vegetable oils conference. Brazil's output will likely be 57 million tonnes, he added.

The shortfall due to drought in Argentina will be partly offset by carryover inventories from last year, he said.
