European Commission allows import of GM rapeseed

The European Commission on Tuesday (Mar 10) cleared imports of GM T45 rapeseed into Europe for use in animal feed.

Bayer-developed T45 rapeseed is herbicide resistant, grown in large quantities in Canada, and has received a positive assessment from the Food Safety Authority.

Opinions in member states could not reach a sufficient majority to accept or reject the product, therefore the European Commission has the right to decide.

The authorisation to import and use in Europe is valid for 10 years.

All food products containing more than 0.9 percent of T45 should be labelled as such in accordance with EU legislation in place since 2004.
