UK supermarket to increase stocks of higher-welfare chickens
UK supermarket, The Co-operative, is to increase its stocks of higher-welfare chickens due to consumer concerns on poultry rearing ethics.
All fresh chicken sold at the supermarket is recorded to higher welfare Elmwood standards or above.
The Co-operative had raised standards for whole chickens back in October 2007, and now it is including chicken fillets and pieces.
The supermarket worked with its suppliers to convert 96 poultry farms across UK to meet higher-welfare Elmwood chicken standards.
The Co-operative supermarket is part of The Co-operative Group, which is a UK consumers' co-operative with over 87,000 employees in its diversified businesses. The Group's 2007 turnover is US$19.1 billion
