Switzerland reports PRRS virus in Canton of Lucerne

Swiss veterinary authorities have reported a subclinical infection of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) at a closed farm with breeding and fattening unit in Canton of Lucerne.

The virus sub-type has been described as one of US origin. The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received a notification on March 7, informing that the virus was found in samples taken on January 27, 2014 for a research project. A total of 213 pigs were tested and 13 were found to be positive for the virus. No deaths were reported and no animals were destroyed and/or removed.

On February 24, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) tests were carried out at the Institute of Virology and Immunology (IVI) and on March 5 and 6, a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and a virus sequencing test were again conducted at the IVI. The results for all tests were positive.
