US January egg production shows slight increase
US egg production totalled 7.69 billion during January 2010, up slightly from last year.
Production included 6.61 billion table eggs and 1.08 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.01 billion were broiler-type and 75 million were egg-type.
The total number of layers during January 2010 averaged 339 million, down 1% from last year. January egg production per 100 layers was 2,268 eggs, up 1% from January 2009.
All layers in the US on February 1, 2010, totalled 338 million, down 1% from last year. The 338 million layers consisted of 281 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 54.5 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs and 2.96 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs. Rate of lay per day on February 1, 2010, averaged 72.5 eggs per 100 layers, up 1% from February 1, 2009.
Egg-type chicks hatched during January 2010 totalled 38.8 million, up 2% from January 2009. Eggs in incubators totalled 39.3 million on February 1, 2010, up 12% from a year ago.
Broiler-type chicks hatched during January 2010 totalled 776 million, down slightly from January 2009. Eggs in incubators totalled 628 million on February 1, 2010, up 1% from a year earlier.
