Chile approves cooked poultry from China

Chile's Department of Agriculture has given certification for seven poultry firms from China to export their products to Chile, marking the first time a Latin American country has approved cooked poultry from China.

Among these seven firms, three of them are from Shandong-- Shandong's Weifang LeGang Cooked Meat Processing Plant, Fucun Cooked Meat Processing Plant under Qingdao's Jiulian Group and Shandong's Liaocheng Yanggu Dafeng Food Co. Ltd.

In August, 2006, Servicio Agricola y Ganadero (SAG), Chile's food safety agency conducted inspections on the hygiene and food safety measures of 14 poultry processing plants, broiler breeding farms , disease prevention and food testing laboratories.

Seven of Shandong's firms were inspected, including three cooked poultry processing plants.

The SAG was satisfied with the results of the inspection and concluded that China's food safety measures were in line with Chile's requirements.

Despite the certification, Shandong's Export Inspection and Quarantine Bureau said it would not let up or lighten inspection on these firms and would continue to ensure that they meet export requirements.
