South Korea starts tracking system for imported beef

South Korea on Monday (Mar 8) launched a tracking system for imported beef to provide country-of-origin information to consumers and enhance recall procedures.

The farm ministry said the tracking system, initially being used on a voluntary trial basis, asks importers and distributors to provide information such as the country-of-origin, shelf life and whether the meat has been frozen during shipment.

"Initially a select few department stores and large discount outlets will have the checking system in place, but if the related law is passed, all beef sold in the country can be checked," said a ministry official.

Seoul aims to mandate the tracking system for imported beef by December, expecting that the necessary infrastructure will have been implemented by then, the official added.

Recent polls showed that 91% of Korean consumers favour a tracking system so they can make informed choices while purchasing beef imports.
