India extends ban on China's dairy products

India on Tuesday (Mar 10) extended the ban on sale of Chinese dairy products for another three months as it was found to contain high levels of melamine.

The products were banned in New Delhi and other parts of the country since September last year in the wake of the detection of high level of industrial chemical melamine that caused six deaths and thousands of children to suffer from kidney ailments in China late last year.

A senior officer of Prevention of Food and Adulteration Department of the Delhi government said the reason for the ban being extended until June was due to the Chinese milk products not certified for consumption yet.

Melamine, used for making plastics and fertiliser, was found in infant formula and other milk products of 22 Chinese dairy firms, resulting in worldwide ban on the products.
