China builds environmental friendly hog farm in Jiangxi

Jiangxi province's Wujin Hog Cooperative and four other companies will invest a total of RMB250 million in a 200,000 heads/year hog farm. Of these, 70 percent total annual hog release will be delivered to Ningbo, Zhejiang province.

According to sources, the design of the farm had taken into account the need to treat animal waste in a central location, thereby minimizing environmental impact.

After surveying a few possible sites, Jiangxi's Wuyuan district, which borders Zhejiang province, was selected. The four investing companies in this project include Ningbo Meihu Animal Husbandry Company, one of Zhejiang's biggest livestock companies.

Construction of the first phase, which will cost RMB125 million, had begun recently. About 86 hectares of land was acquired for this purpose, and the first-phase is scheduled for completion in 2010. The second phase, will cost another RMB125 million, will be completed in 5 years time.
