UK in animal disease cost-sharing talks

British Poultry Council (BPC) members have recently discussed on a plan for the government and the livestock sector to share cost and responsibility for animal diseases.

Outbreaks of animal diseases have hogged the headlines for the past two years, and the plan will provide an opportunity to assess disease management and cost efficiently, said Ted Wright, chairman of BPC.

The government is planning for responsibility sharing, and cost sharing will allow the focus to move on from the diseases to funding of animal health and welfare, according to the BPC.

Charging mechanisms and disease categorisations are part of the consultation, as well as the methods that other countries are implementing.

Discussions regarding the government's responsibility and cost sharing with the livestock sector will continue to develop on.
