Russia to further develop trout production in Karelia
Domestically produced trout will be increasingly important in Russia's fish market, according to analysts who are looking into the progress and growth rate of aquaculture development in Karelia.
The federal state of Karelia is Russia's leading trout producer, and it is now set to expand production, which is likely to lower Russia's dependency on imports from Norway and Chile.
Domestic aquaculture has been given opportunities for expansion and trout has showed the highest profitability of an average 30 percent in the food sector.
Russia has invested much into the development of its aquaculture industry in 2007, spending more than RUB1.2 billion (US$50 million) on the construction, reconstruction and modernisation of aquaculture enterprises.
