Poultry production is one of the pillars of China's agriculture industries. According to official statistics, 8.3 billion birds were sold and another 4.7 billion birds were kept on farm in China in 2003. With total output valued at RMB241.5 billion, China's poultry industry directly employs 13.7 million farmers in the poultry production sector. Net income of the Chinese farmers from the poultry production industry amounted to RMB27.1 billion.

However, the recent bird flu outbreak has adversely affected China's domestic poultry consumption as well as the export of poultry products. For the purpose of improving consumers' confidence on poultry consumption, more than one hundred leading poultry enterprises took part in a conference recently to formally pledge to provide consumers with safe poultry products.

On February 28, 2004 a conference to pledge the provision of safe poultry products by leading poultry producers in China was jointly organized by the China Chamber of Commerce of Import and Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce & Animal By-Products (CFNA) and China Animal Agriculture Association (CAAA). At the conference, which was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, chief executives and general managers from over a hundred of core poultry producers all over China made a formal pledge to the nation's poultry consumers.
