China pork imports down in January
                                  


China's pork import was 105,000 tonnes in January 2009, sliding 42.2 percent over the same period of a year earlier, according to news issued by the General Administration of Customs on March 5.

 

The total value of the import also saw an on-year decrease of 43.5 percent to US$11.46 million.

 

China's pork import from the EU reached 6,400 tonnes, slipping 47.1 percent and US imports also dropped 48.6 percent to 2,100 tonnes. The import from the two regions accounted for 81 percent of the total pork import in China.

 

Meanwhile, the import of pork under general trade hit 102,000 tonnes which was a sharp fall of 43.3 percent while the import by private companies dipped 16 percent to 8,000 tonnes in January.
