Uruguay beef exports down 7 percent
 

Uruguay meats institute Institute Nacional de Carnes reported that from January 1 to February 24, the country's beef exports totalled US$123 million, a downturn of seven percent as against the US$132 million exported in same period in 2006.

The US market was the main destination for the Uruguayan beef with 31.000 metric tonnes for US$52 million or 42 percent of total exports. In February 2006, exports to the US totalled US$67 million. Exports to the European Union amounted to US$24 million against US$ 21 million in same period in 2006. Shipments to Chile narrowed from US$ 9 million to US$ 3 million.
