China to foster healthy meat sector development

China will still promote the sustainable and healthy development of the meat sector during the 2011-2015 period, according to the five-year plan of the country.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on Friday officially released the 12th Five-Year (2011-2015) Development Plan for the meat industry, which outlines the development goals and major tasks of this industry, as well as putting forward specific measures to ensure the achievement of these goals.

The country targets a steady increase of meat output, with the total volume targeted to reach 85 million tonnes by 2015. Meanwhile, efforts are to be made to establish to a more reasonable product structure. By 2015, the outputs of port, poultry, beef, mutton, and miscellaneous livestock meat are projected to hit 53.6 million tonnes, 17.8 million tonnes, 6.9 million tonnes, 5 million tonnes, and 1.7 million tonnes respectively. Moreover, the country should try to secure meat quality, optimise industrial structure, advance technology, and promote energy-saving and emissions reduction in a comprehensive way.

In addition, over the five-year period the aim is to complete the following tasks: establish a safe supply system of raw materials; speed up the standardised reform and upgrading of slaughtering enterprises; carry out a brand strategy for meat processing; enhance companies' independent innovation ability; establish an integrity management system; set up a cold chain logistics distribution system; and foster industrial clusters.

The Chinese government will further improve its policy and regulatory systems, strengthen financial support, encourage mergers and acquisitions, enhance quality and security management, and encourage industrial organisations to comprehensively fulfil their roles, in a bid to realise these goals.
