Australian beef exports to South Korea shoots up

The Australia Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry reported Australian beef exports to South Korea during February have reached 14,755 tonnes slaughter weight (swt), 38 percent above February 2006 levels.

Chilled beef exports increased 56 percent on February 2006, to 2,717 tonnes swt, while frozen exports were up by 35 percent, to 12,038 tonnes swt. The increased shipments in February were assisted by the ongoing absence of US product from the Korean market, along with increased beef production levels in Australia.

There was strong growth in grainfed beef exports for the month, with shipments increasing 77 percent on last year, to 4,517 tonnes swt, as demand for grainfed product remains strong. Of total grainfed exports for February, 1,594 tonnes swt were chilled, an increase of 57 percent on February 2006 levels.
