Rosendale Dairy may become largest dairy farm in Wisconsin
Rosendale Dairy is now a step closer to becoming the largest dairy in Wisconsin after the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) issued a wastewater discharge permit to the business.
The permit will allow Rosendale to expand its herd size from 700 cows to 4,000 cows. A possible second phase requiring public review and DNR approval could add an additional 4,000 cows, bringing total herd size to 8,000 cows.
DNR officials said the second expansion would make Rosendale the largest dairy farm in Wisconsin.
Local residents and officials concerned of the expansion criticised the large-scale operation, fearing that it could pollute the environment and increase traffic.
However, Rosendale said it will invest US$6 million into environmental technology and must, under state and federal rules, submit details nutrient management plans to ensure that groundwater is protected from pollution.
The nutrient management plan covers more than 5,600 acres.
The project will cost US$70 million, according to Rosendale Dairy partner Jim Ostrom.
