Peru to increase soymeal imports in 2009
                            


Peruvian soymeal imports are forecast at 750,000 tonnes in crop year (CY) 2009, up 20,000 tonnes from last year, according to a US Department of Agriculture attache report posted Wednesday (March 4) on the Foreign Agricultural Services Web site.

 

Soymeal imports into Peru are forecast at 750,000 tonnes in CY 2009, an increase of 20,000 tonnes compared to the previous year. Poultry meat production in CY 2009 is forecast at 780,000 tonnes and will continue driving Peruvian soy meal imports. Total soymeal imports in CY 2008 were 730,237 tonnes. Paraguay continued to be the leading soybean meal exporter to Peru in 2007, holding 52 percent of the market share.

 

Soyoil imports are forecast at 300,000 tonnes in CY 2009. Imports in CY 2008 were 291,011 tonnes, of which 97 percent was imported from Argentina. Soyoil consumption in CY 2008 was 297,000 tonnes.

 

Fishmeal production for CY 2009 is estimated at 1.43 million tonnes, about the same as the previous year. Total fish catch for reduction in CY 2008 was 6.13 million tonnes. Fishmeal exports for CY 2009 are forecast at 1.4 million tonnes. The GOP recently passed a decree to establish individual fishing quotas by boat. The individual quota is to reflect the boat's historic catch and its storage capacity.

 

Fish oil production for in CY 2008 was 287,000 tonnes. Post forecasts production at 320,000 tonnes in CY 2009.
